FY-6 SUPER FUZZ #8

FY-6 Super Fuzz is based on the legendary FY-6 Companion Fuzz made by the Shin-Ei company in the 1970's. The super Fuzz has a 6 transistor stage circuit with octave-up, giving this fuzz a rich high gain crunch that's clipped by a pair of germanium diodes.

I modified this circuit and changed the Tone switch to a variable potentiometer that offers more tonal options than the original design. The vintage Shin-Ei FY-6 had two knobs (Balance, Expander), and a slide switch marked "Tone" that selected between scooped mids octave forward, and thick mid-range with less pronounced octave effect.

I took a lot of care to find vintage silicon transistors that sound fantastic in this circuit. After extensive searching and experimenting, I scored some low gain NOS Motorola 2N3903 and 2N2926 that sound fantastic. The originals used 2SC828 that had a very low gain range and are virtually impossible to find anymore. Ultimately, the type of transistor is not important as long as they sound good.

The circuit board is a reproduction of the original PCB found in the vintage FY-6. These are beautifully recreated vintage style boards made by Pigeon FX in Hastings, England.
